The
McKinnon House
|
The
Terry-McKinnon House was built in the 1880s by cotton factor
S.D. Rainey. It is listed on the National Register of Historic
Places and is a recorded Texas Historic Landmark. It was
purchased by Ted and Kay McKinnon in 1995 and has been
extensively renovated while maintaining the architectural
integrity. It has original light fixtures from the 1800s which
have been converted from gas to electricity in the entryway. The
dining room has the original hand-beaded walls and the staircase
has a beautiful walnut banister which is original to the house.
Both floors of the home will
be open for touring. |

The
Atkins-Castleman House
|
Thomas
Ownes Alley, the son of Jefferson's co-founder, Daniel Alley,
built this home in 1859 for Steamboat Captain James M. Tucker
and his wife. W.T. Atkins, a local banker and owner of the
Jefferson Iron Co. following his service in the Civil War,
purchased the home in 1892. In the 1920s, the home was turned
into apartments to accommodate local workers. Throughout the
1940s and 1950s, the home changed hands, and in 1961 Mrs. Nettie
Mae Lemmons and her son bought it and added the kitchen and
laundry room. The current owners of the home are Lou & Mary
Castleman, who fully restored the Atkins House. |

Wise
Manor
|
This
historic Houston Street Victorian cottage was situated near the
ferry landing that brought riches to early Jefferson. The first
known owners in 1851 were John M. and Nancy Dollehite. A
distinguished occupant, Mrs. Ernesting Sterne, served as
postmaster in Jefferson from 1872-1875. The house was restored
by Mrs. Katherine R. Wise. |

The
Hileman House
|
The
Hileman House is a Victorian Cottage that was built in 1851 by
Issac Pensky, a Jewish merchant in Jefferson. At the time, it
mirrored Wise Manor next door. Mrs. Nellie Jackson bought the
house in 1940 and made the changes to convert it into a boarding
house. The house changed hands, until in 1973 Tony and Mary
Hileman bought the house from a Mrs. Williams and restored it
using all original woodwork and doors. Mr. Hileman was the
Marion County District Attorney at the time. The Hile-mans
raised three children in the home, where Mary Hileman continues
to live. |
