Preserving a Texas Landmark

Built in the 1850s by steamboat captain William Perry, the Excelsior House Hotel holds the distinction of being the
oldest hotel in continuous operation in the state of Texas. Since 1961, the property has been owned
and restored by the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club, ensuring its architectural integrity and historical significance
are protected for future generations.

Preservation remains at the heart of every project undertaken by the Excelsior Foundation.

Recently Completed Projects

Thanks to generous community support, several key restoration projects were completed:

  • Replacement of the Excelsior House Hotel’s second-story balcony ceiling using hand-hewn beadboard, restoring both
    historical accuracy and craftsmanship.
  • Completion of the Carriage House renovation, including the reinstallation of the historic Excelsior House sign
originally displayed at the front of the hotel.

These projects enhance both the appearance and longevity of the property while honoring its original character.

Excelsior Happenings

The Winter season brought several well-attended community events:

  • Candlelight Dinners hosted in the Excelsior Hotel Ballroom on the first and second weekends of
December, with an average of 60 guests per evening across six nights.
  • Christmas Artisan Market featuring 14 vendors, held in William Perry Park during both Candlelight
    weekends.
  • Annual Foundation Christmas Party celebrating and honoring the dedicated Excelsior Hotel staff.

These events continue to strengthen community ties and bring new visitors to historic Jefferson.
