Step back in time and experience the opulence of the Gilded Age with a visit to Jason “Jay” Gould’s legendary train car, “The Atalanta.” On display across from the historic Excelsior House Hotel on Austin Street, this luxurious private parlor car is a must-see attraction in Jefferson, Texas.

Jay Gould, a prominent railroad magnate and financial speculator of the 19th century, spared no expense in outfitting “The Atalanta.” Named after the Goddess of Speed, this exquisite train car boasts four staterooms, a lavish lounge, an elegant dining room, a fully-equipped kitchen, a butler’s pantry, and even a ballroom. It’s a true testament to the grandeur and sophistication of its era.

Ironically, despite Jefferson’s initial rejection of Gould’s bid to route his railroad through the town, “The Atalanta” now stands as a proud symbol of the town’s rich history. Gould’s infamous note, “The End of Jefferson,” penned in the Excelsior House Hotel guest register, adds a touch of historical intrigue to your visit.

Today, this magnificent trophy car is owned and operated by the Excelsior Foundation. Don’t miss your chance to tour this piece of history and marvel at its splendor. Book your tickets now and immerse yourself in the elegance of a bygone era.
